Qatar GSM segment among fastest growing in the Gulf - Tuesday, August 09, 2005
The number of GSM subscribers in the Middle East and North Africa is expected to reach 77.7 million by this year-end.
The total number of subscribers in the region is set to exceed 150 million by 2009.
Subscribers in the region grew to 54.3 million at the end of 2004. This represents an increase of 16.6 million on the 2003 figure, the region’s largest ever annual subscriber growth.
North Africa recorded the fastest growth with 9.1 million new subscribers in 2004.
In the Gulf, Qatar had one of the fastest growing GSM segments with the penetration rate close to 80%.
The country has more than 600,000 mobile customers, a majority of them pre-paid.
