Doha set to invest $14 billion in tanker fleet - Saturday, August 06, 2005
QATAR will invest about $14 billion (QR51bn) in tankers that will ferry LNG to customers
across the world in the next five to seven years, Qatargas vice-chairman Faisal al-Suwaidi has said.
Up to 86 vessels, including some 16 super tankers, will be required to ferry liquefied natural gas when Qatar boosts its LNG production capacity to 77 million tons annually by 2012, he said.
Each LNG tanker would cost about $200 million (QR728mn), said al-Suwaidi in the latest issue of Shell in the Middle East.
About 60% of the LNG tankers to be procured by Qatar will be owned by Qatar Gas Transport Company (Q-Gas / Naqilat).
Most of the LNG tankers will be built at three yards in South Korea.
Naqilat, al-Suwaidi said, would certainly become one of the world’s largest shipping companies in the next few years. The new fleet to be owned by the company would include tankers with capacities between 210,000 and 230,000MT. In comparison the existing fleet are in the capacity range of 135,000MT to 150,000MT.
Al-Suwaidi said the 16 super tankers would be built just to deliver gas from the Qatargas-II project. The $12bn Qatargas-II will be the largest investment ever made in a hydrocarbon project in the world.
It will comprise two huge LNG trains with annual capacity of 7.8mn tonnes each. They are slated for a late 2007 or early 2008 start up.
He said Naqilat would not limit itself to owning, maintaining or operating LNG tankers.
“We will also operate liquefied petroleum gas tankers, sulphur and condensate tankers and petrochemical carriers.”
Industry figures indicate that by the decade-end, some 300 LNG tankers will be in operation worldwide. In place of 152 vessels in operation and 34 on order in 2003, there were 174 tankers in operation and 113 on order in 2004.
Natural gas trade involving Middle East countries had grown significantly during the last decade mainly due to the projects established in Qatar and Oman and the expansion of the LNG trade between Abu Dhabi and Japan.
The trend will continue for sometime with planned expansions of the existing projects and new LNG export projects coming up in Egypt, Yemen and Iran.
