INTRODUCTION:
Market Index is a single descriptive statistic that summarizes the relative change and/ or movement in an underlying group of variables e.g. price, quantity or value from one period to another to reveal the performance of the entire market.
In the stock market world, you need a quick way to compare the movement of the market, up or down, from day to day, from month to month or from year to year. An index is just a benchmark or yardstick expressed as a single number that makes it possible to do such comparing.
