Qatar to award $2.7bn gas ship contract in MayPublished: Tuesday, 19 April, 2005, 01:56 PM Doha Time

By Dania Saadi
DUBAI: Qatar will award in May $2.7bn in contracts to build 12 liquefied natural gas tankers that will ship the fuel to the US, a shipping official said.
Qatar is also seeking a foreign investor to help build and operate a $500mn ship repair dockyard that will service the world’s biggest LNG tankers.
“We are evaluating the offers (for the LNG tankers) and an initial agreement will be signed in May,” Bob Curt, managing director of Qatar Gas Transport Co (Naqilat) said in a telephone interview from Doha.
Each tanker is expected to cost about $225mn, he said. Naqilat earlier this year invited more than 10 shipyards and shipowners, such as Teekay Shipping Corp and Overseas Shipholding Group, to bid for the contracts.
Qatar last year also ordered the world’s largest liquefied natural tankers as it seeks to be the top exporter of the fuel to countries such as the US and the UK by 2010.
Meanwhile, shipbroker Lorentzen & Stemoco has said shipyards received a record 77 orders for LNG tankers last year, including Qatar’s contracts for the world’s largest, as natural gas consumption started rising.
Curt also said: “We are looking for a partner because we don’t have experience in running a dry dock. Qatar doesn’t have a dry dock and currently repairs its ships at nearby yards that include Dubai.”
Naqilat needs a dry dock to service more than 87 LNG tankers, including the world’s largest known as Q-flex, with a capacity of 216,000 cubic metres, and crude oil tankers that will call on Ras Laffan Port.
Qatar has commissioned the world’s three largest shipyards – Hyundai Heavy Industries, Samsung Heavy Industries and Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering – to build 67 gas tankers.
Meanwhile, Atlas Copco, the world’s biggest maker of air compressors, said it has won orders worth 240mn kronor ($33.9mn) to supply turbo compressors for use on board LNG tankers.
Atlas will supply two ships that carry gas from Qatar to the UK, the Stockholm-based company said yesterday in a statement. The gear was ordered by shipyards in South Korea, where the vessels are being built. – Bloomberg
