When the Nexus 10 by Samsung hits the market in two weeks, it may be the best Android tablet available.
Its 10-inch screen has a 2560 x 1600 resolution, for a pixel density of 300ppi - especially impressive compared with the 264ppi of Apple's iPad with Retina display. The 16:10 aspect ratio means widescreen videos will actually appear larger than they do on the iPad.
Android 4.2 on the Nexus 10 will see most of the same improvements as on the Nexus 4, along with support for HD magazines and multiple users (based on Google account login). For those stuck sharing a tablet, this feature will be a huge blessing.
Google seems confident that its dual-core ARM Cortex-A15 CPU, paired with a quad-core Mali T604 GPU and 2GB of RAM, will be able to handle whatever developers throw at it. With Android 4.2's speed boost it's very unlikely the Nexus 10 will have any noticeable interface lag.
Ports for microUSB and microHDMI, plus two NFC chips, indicate that Google and Samsung aren't cutting hardware corners here.
The Nexus 10 also has dual cameras - 5MP rear-facing and 1.9MP front-facing - and a 9,000 mAh battery that Google says will hold up for 9 hours of HD video. While the tablet is WiFi only (at least for the foreseeable future), its pricing - $400 for 16GB model; $500 for 32GB model - undercuts comparable iPad models by $100. The Nexus 10 will be available from the Google Play store on November 13th.
Of course, no matter how sweet the Nexus 10's hardware is, there's still the unpleasant fact of the severely limited Android tablet ecosystem. Will the Nexus 10 finally spur developers to catch up with the iPad for apps and games, or are Android tablets a lost cause? Let us know in the comments.
